Statistics on the Web

by Ed Swires-Hennessy

It has been suggested that the GSS Electronic Dissemination Working Group identify statistics sites on the Web which have interesting features. These may be because of the data or information available or because of the technology and design employed. This piece is thus the first of a series. Should anyone wish to suggest sites which merit a mention, please refer them to me with your reasons.

The first two sites are suggested for different reasons. The first at is the site of the Dutch statistical office. The site is bilingual (for those who do not speak Dutch) but the two sides of the site are not equivalent. Two points of interest here: you can look at their official statistics journal (all articles are in English) – the last one carried articles on EDI – or you can wander into their first cut of Statline, the online statistical dissemination facility, which should have all data produced by CBS on it by the end of March (translations of the headings etc will take a little longer but English is coming).

The second from Eurostat at allows easy access to classifications and their house journal ‘Sigma’ as well as an explanation of the European Statistical System. There is mention of the New Cronos which is their database: this is not accessible to the general public via the Internet, but some have direct access from within ONS. This allows use of data visualisation techniques.

Do send notes of your favourite statistical sites to me, Ed Swires-Hennessy, by e-mail or post to National Assembly for Wales, Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3NQ.
